THE VALUE OF BEING SEEN

We all need someone to believe in us, to see us beyond our outward appearance, roles, gender, or personality. And, critical, see through to our intrinsic worth and goodness. Eight years ago, I began working with a spiritual coach. I had never experienced the quiet presence of someone who could witness my heart without judgement or strategies. He sat still and listened to what I had to say and how I felt. He wasn't jumping from thought to thought, cutting in, washing dishes, nor looking away. He was calm and open.
At first, I felt uncomfortable and wiggly. I noticed the ways I hid myself. Deflecting with jokes and chatter. The easier to keep from getting hurt or misread. I looked away at any sense of discomfort. Slowly, over time, I became more comfortable with his gaze and inquiry, and my tender heart. I began sharing my fears and dreams. I noticed where I was defended, hurt, or desperate for acknoweldgement.
What a relief. Those precious hours of being seen and supported changed my life forever.
I now hold space for and receive others as they are. A settling occurs. Breathing room arrives. From here, life becomes more bearable and windows open.
In the present moment, we can learn to arrive and respond to life with more ease and clarity. How wonderful.
May I do the same for you?
