We all have moments and long stretches of not doing what we think or know we should! You are in good company. We're over-busy, over-stimulated, over-tasked, and over-wrought.
The Motivating Inertia Meditation is your 15-20 minute reset.
Close your door. Find a solitary space. Mute your phone.
Have paper and pen or a journal close at hand. Let yourself settle into your body while resting in a comfortable chair. Gently close your eyes. Imagine your spine lifting and shoulders softening.
Please take one full breath in. Then one long, slow breath out. Imagine your mind resting on the breath. Thoughts will flutter in and out. The body may ache. Nevertheless, return again and again to your breath. No need to push anything away.
Next, call to mind an issue where you feel stuck or unmotivated. Perhaps a task at work, repairing a relationship, having “the talk”, asking for a raise, finishing that document, or calling a plumber to fix the faucet that’s dripped non-stop for a year.
Gather your pen and paper. As you answer the four questions below, also note any sensations arising in your body.
“When it comes to XYZ issue, what would be the best possible outcome?” Write for 2 minutes.
“Why is this particular issue important to me?” Write for 2 minutes.
“How am I showing up in relationship to this issue?” Write for 2 minutes.
“If this issue were solved, what would that feel like?” Write for 5 minutes.
Rest in the question, being willing, and the way forward. Good work!
Complete this meditation with one in full breath in and one slow breath out. In honor of creating equanimity and agency within.
